In an effort to accelerate its sluggish Covid-19 vaccine rollout, Japan has mobilized its military to set up mass vaccination camps to inoculate elderly people in Tokyo and Osaka on Monday, a move that comes just two months ahead of the Tokyo Olympics which has continued to face calls of cancellation from the country’s medical community and beyond
While Japan struggles to inoculate its population amid a continued surge in Covid-19 cases, the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) steadfast insistence that the games will go forward is drawing a sharp rebuke from people in the country. On Saturday, IOC president Thomas Bach told a meeting of the International Hockey Federation: “The athletes definitely can make their Olympic dreams come true. We have to make some sacrifices to make this possible.” While Bach didn’t mention who he was seeking the “sacrifices” from, several people on social media have assumed he was referring to the Japanese public. On Friday, IOC vice-president John Coates told reporters that the Olympics in Tokyo will go ahead even if there is a state of emergency in the country.
